Monaco issues apology after player conceals anti-homophobia logo

After covering the anti-homophobia logo on his shirt, Monaco midfielder Mohamed Camara received congratulations from coach Adi Hutter as he was substituted during a match against Nantes. The 24-year-old Malian midfielder used tape to cover the logo, which was part of an anti-homophobia campaign led by the French league (LFP) on the final day of the Ligue 1 season.

Monaco’s general manager Thiago Scuro stated that this action by Camara would not happen again next season. Scuro expressed the club’s support for the LFP’s campaign and apologized to the organization for Camara’s actions. He explained that Camara covered the logo for religious reasons, and while the club respects all religions, they do not condone this behavior.

Despite scoring a goal in Monaco’s 4-0 victory, Camara’s actions received criticism from France’s sports minister, who called for strong sanctions against both the player and the club. In Mali, Camara found support on social media from those who believed in respecting the religious beliefs of athletes.

While Scuro mentioned that sanctions against the player would be addressed internally, he acknowledged that the club could face punishment as well. He assured that such an incident would not be repeated in the future and emphasized the importance of upholding the values of the campaign against homophobia.
